How has your role at Bridgewater differed from roles you’ve held in the past?
I came to Bridgewater from a small startup I joined out of college, and at the startup I did everything from making coffee to writing code to stakeholder management. When I came to Bridgewater it was a bit of the same flavor — you are often required and encouraged to wear multiple hats, take on more responsibility, and stretch yourself. For myself, it was a nice transition from a startup to a larger organization that still had a startup feel.
How has Bridgewater supported your professionally and personally?
On the personal front, Bridgewater is a unique culture and community when it comes to forming relationships. For example, everyone I work with knows my family; in fact, my kid even refers to some of them as “Uncle.” Personally, my time here has been extremely rewarding.
Professionally, Bridgewater makes you stretch in ways that I don’t think even you know you are capable of. I’ve learned that it’s fine to fail, but it is unacceptable to not try. I’ve been lucky that my managers and my team have always encouraged me to take risks and have been there when I’ve crashed to lift me up.
What meaningful impact have you been able to make here?
There are a lot of things I’m proud of, but I think I’m most proud of is my ability to build out cohesive engineering teams that can deliver on good software and value to the business. I quickly moved from an individual contributor writing code to finding my true value in running teams. Given my success in building and running great engineering teams, I feel that being a leader is the most impactful thing I’ve done at Bridgewater.
What is an interesting business challenge that you’re trying to answer?
In Client Services Technology, we’ve been on a journey of becoming more digital to serve our clients and stakeholders in a best-in-class way. In the past, we would meet with our clients in person, and we’re now using technology to empower those same conversations from afar. On this digital journey, one of the most important problems we’re trying to solve is how to deliver timeless and timely content and insights to our clients in a rapidly changing world with our technology as a key enabler.
What is your favorite part of your job?
It’s fun! My favorite thing about working here is that every day is a different day at Bridgewater — it’s never boring. Given the position I’m in as a manager, there’s always a unique challenge or interesting idea that someone comes in with that makes the day go in a different direction. I think the fun in my job is never knowing what new challenge I’m going to encounter that day.
