Porter Diehl joined Bridgewater in 2009 and is now Deputy Chief Executive Officer. In this role, he partners with the CEO to set and drive the strategic goals and oversee the day-to-day management of the firm. He is also a member of the firm's Commercial and Business Strategy Committee, Operating Committee, and a Bridgewater Partner. As one of the world’s foremost experts in the construction and risk management of investment portfolios, Porter has worked closely with Bridgewater’s co-CIOs to improve the portfolio construction process, evaluate and manage investment risks, and design investment strategies for clients. His work has included evolving risk controls and event risk strategies, researching how to best combine beta and alpha, and, in recent years, developing with the firm’s CIOs an investment strategy focused on tactically mitigating the risks Bridgewater’s clients face during downturns.
Reflecting on Porter’s impact, Co-Chief Investment Officer Karen Karniol-Tambour says, “I have worked closely with Porter for over a decade, and he is a unique talent in the investment industry, someone that comes along once in many years. I have seen him lead a range of strategic projects, and he is uniquely capable of mastering incredibly complex topics that few in the world understand, while keeping his eye on the big picture, navigating multiple perspectives and leading the firm in new and unexplored strategic directions. His values are impeccable, and he is deeply committed to putting our clients first, as well as leveraging his experience at Bridgewater for public service.”
