Sian Beilock
Sian Beilock is an outside director on Bridgewater’s Operating Board of Directors. She joined the Internal Board as an Independent Director in July 2021. Sian is a cognitive scientist by training and serves as the 19th President of Dartmouth College. She previously served as the eighth president of Barnard College at Columbia University.
At Barnard, Sian raised the College’s eminence in math, science, and technology to parallel its renown in the arts and humanities. Barnard also became a leader in health and wellbeing for young people. Under her leadership, applications and financial aid each grew by 50%, increasing the quality and diversity of the student body.
Prior to her appointment at Barnard, Sian spent twelve years at the University of Chicago where she was the Executive Vice Provost, an officer of the university, and the Stella M. Rowley Professor of Psychology.
Sian is also one of the world’s leading experts on the brain science behind “choking under pressure” in business, education, and sports. She is the author of the critically-acclaimed Choke and How The Body Knows Its Mind (Simon & Schuster, 2010, 2015). She was chosen as one of twenty-five “Women to Watch” by Crain’s Chicago Business Magazine in 2007 and has won eight major awards from national and international societies devoted to psychology, sport psychology, and education. Notably, she is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation and, in 2017, Sian won the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences. Her 2018 TED Talk has been viewed over 2.5 million times. She is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Sian received her BS in cognitive science from the University of California, San Diego. She holds PhDs in both psychology and kinesiology from Michigan State University.
