Head of Portfolio Research Sam Haber has been named one of Insider’s 2022 “Rising Stars of Wall Street” in recognition of his talent, drive, and contributions to Bridgewater and the financial services industry. Sam’s clear passion and understanding for financial markets is reflected in the rapid rise of his career.
Sam began clerking for traders in the crude oil trading pit at the New York Mercantile Exchange while only in high school and college. Post-college, Sam joined Barclays Capital, where he spent two years as an analyst on the bank’s US Rates trading desk.
In 2013, Sam joined Bridgewater as a Trading Associate, implementing the firm’s desired exposures and using his distinct perspective — developed through close interaction with the markets — to evolve the execution strategy. In 2015, Sam started on Bridgewater’s Investment Associate track where he has been able to work across the firm’s investment engine, first as a member of its Trading Analytics team, overseeing the investment outcomes of Bridgewater’s 24-hour trading execution desk.
In 2017, Sam moved into a new role running the firm’s Commodities research team, leading research on Chinese commodity markets before being promoted to his current role as Lead of the Portfolio Research Team where he is responsible for the evolution of the firm’s portfolio construction process, evaluating and managing investment risks across Bridgewater’s portfolios, and overseeing the team of analysts who are contributing to those efforts.
